Overview & Speaker’s Guide Provided below are shingles educational materials that organizations can use to raise awareness about shingles among older people. To download these materials, simply follow the link for each item. Before using the shingles educational materials, you are encouraged to read the “Speaker’s Guide.” This guide provides basic information about shingles disease and the Spotlight on Shingles: Know what you can do program, an explanation of the materials available on this Web page and guidance for conducting shingles educational activities. The guide also provides sample newsletter articles about shingles and a sample e-mail message for promoting shingles educational workshops hosted by your organization. Software Requirements for Downloading Materials Some of the shingles educational materials made available on this Web page are in PDF format. To view materials in PDF format, you will need to have the Adobe® Reader® software application loaded on your computer. Also, the shingles educational video requires that you have Windows Media® Player application. Adobe® Reader® and Windows Media® Player can be downloaded at no cost by following the links provided below. Downloading & Using the PowerPoint Presentation Provided below is a Spotlight on Shingles PowerPoint® presentation that can be used to conduct shingles educational workshops for older adults. Guidance on conducting workshops is provided in the “Speaker’s Guide” document available on this Web page. To download the PowerPoint® presentation, right-click the link below and select “Save Target As…” You then will be prompted to name the file and select a location to save it. Please note that slide four of the PowerPoint® presents a brief shingles disease animation that demonstrates how the same virus that caused chickenpox can cause shingles. If your computer is properly equipped to run Flash animation in PowerPoint®, the animation will start running automatically when the presentation is viewed in “Slide Show” mode. If your computer is not equipped to play Flash animation, please download one of the animation files provided below; the “Shingles Animation_PC” file is compatible with personal computers (“PCs”), while the “Shingles Animation_MAC” file is compatible with Apple computers (“Macs”). When you arrive at slide four during your presentation, find and run the animation file by double-clicking it. Also, the shingles disease animation contains audio. You may want to consider connecting speakers to your computer so that audience members can hear the audio. If you will not connect speakers to your computer, you may read a brief script while the animation plays. This script is provided in the notes section of slide four.

here Spotlight on Shingles Educational Brochure Your organization is invited to order copies of the Spotlight on Shingles: Know what you can do brochure. The brochure provides information about the risk for shingles, the signs and symptoms of the disease and what to do if you think you might have shingles. The brochure can be disseminated to older audiences in a wide variety of settings, such as shingles educational workshops hosted by your organization, health fairs, community centers, assisted living facilities and many others.
